Knowledge based translation (KBT) is based on the fact that, for specialized content, only translators who know the subjects well may bring the best quality and productivity. For example, for very technical projects, the subject expertise would play a more important role than the translation skills.

The difficulty of knowledge based translation is identifying subject expertise of translators. The subject keywords such as medical or legal are helpful but far from enough.
