Why do word counts vary?

We might get different word counts with different software. The reason is while the basic algorithms are same, different software might choose different rules for handling

• special characters;
• mixed languages;
• in-line markups.

When there are differences among the software applications, we usually cannot say which is correct and which is wrong. All word count methods can be accurate and applicable for their own purposes.
