Multiple language pairs in profiles
An improvement suggestion: would it be possible to modify the profile page to allow multiple language pairs?
For example, I'm a native speaker of Russian and English, and can translate freely from and into either, but the current profile setup only lets me set one source language and one target language, thus only reflecting half of my translation capacity. It'll get even worse once I become proficient in Japanese, my next goal.

Translating from a language that is not your first language
Of course, after having lived in a country for more than 10 years, you are a native speaker. I mean, this should apply to people working in translations. In Europe, I have heard, it is five years.
It makes sense: you go to school, you have a job, you watch TV and so on.
Update
Rather than allowing multiple langague pairs on profile, we now consider to build a list of "equivalent languages", with which system will allow translators to work with multiple language pairs, for certain languages and jobs.
Please have a look at the feature request 112947 and give your constructive input there - we need your support for pushing this ahead.

The issue isn´t translation INTO more than one language, it´s FROM more than one TO your mother tongue

Actually, chrischas, both ways are relevant. Is there any reason why I shouldn't translate into more than one language if I am equally proficient at multiple "mother tongues"?

We now plan to allow translators to define multiple languages that they can translate from. See feature request 112939.

Good points
The current profile is designed based on the following two assumptions:
1) A person can have only ONE native langauge.
2) A professional translators is encouraged to translate from only his/her first language and to only his/her second langauge.
Alexei, your case indicates our assumptions are wrong. Now we want to invite all translators to give their input -
What are your opinins, professional translators?
American English and British English
It does not make any difference for me FROM which of them to translate into Russian. I am sure it would help to have plain 'English' among those choices.
Multiple language translation
I am a native spaniard, I have been living in the States and in several countries around Latin America. Actually I am a resident in Brazil, as I am proficient in Spanish, English and Portuguese I do translate from one to another language without problems, and as a matter of fact I have cashed several translations doing so. Then I have to agree with those who believe we should be allowed to make multidirectional translations between our proficient languages.

If I was a direct client...
Native speaker should always be the most basic requirement to a translator. You know the language, culture, custom, you know what is the hot news in the major media of the country/area, you know the most popular terms or phrases cioned by internet citizen and understand why...
If I was a direct client, I would be reluctant to send my job to the translators who learn my job's target language as the second or third language during study or working or even live in that country for years. Something subtle is not easy to grasp but key to excellent translation.
