My name is Grace. I'm a certified Spanish to English Medical Interpreter and have been working as a Medical Translator for about 4 years. I'm an American citizen but my husband is retired and we have been living in Uruguay now for 3 years. We lived in Costa Rica for 1 year. We were both English second language teachers in the US before my husband retired. I am 10 years younger than him and I don't have a retirement so I am working to make some extra spending money. I also work as a translator for SpeakLike. I haven't seen any medical texts on Translia yet in the 2 years or so since I signed up. I hope they will receive some because I rally like working with pharmaceutical terminology and medical technical work such as translating ultrasound users guides. That's my passion and what I'm best at.

Right from early school days, I had been taught to understand all aspects of a language, viz. as a means of communication, conversation, reading, writing, understanding, interpreting and expressing. Language has no limits, the more one learns, the more he craves for more. One learns every moment. This is the spirit with which one must live. I am very fond of reading. My interests are varied.

Hi Nancy,
I have been translating documents pertaining to alternative health from French to English and English to French (Canada). This domain is blooming in Canada and everything has to be at least in French to be on the shelf in Québec.
I have a translation certificate with a medical specialty. I also have a degree in environmental science and diplomas in food science. I mainly joined this group out of curiousity. Apart from the Spanish-English glossary posted on this forum, there isn't many discussion about translation. they might be on the actual job sites, which I haven't go the chance to see yet.

Well, I studied Communications and Law at university and then I moved to Belgium because of my husband's job and there I studied Jewelry. Because of my constant moving from country to country I was able to develop great skills as a translator. I have done translations from the Medical area (medicines, user's manual to machines to vaccination), Military, NGO's, Tourism and Travel (did a lot for hotels in Asia wheN I lived there), children pedagogy and, of course, lots and lots of legal documents (did a lot for fellow brazilians around the world where I have lived, when they needed something for consulate documentation, visas, etc).

I feel lucky! I translate tech docs and docs related to aeronautics and that is where I have the most expertise so I am very lucky. I can do other subjects but find them much more difficult and time consuming. I must count my blessings!
Hearing about your backgrounds is very interesting as it gives me ideas on areas to look at for projects. There are so many industries that could do more translations but don't for whatever reason. I am trying to get into these areas and open them up!

Nancy, it will be our pride and joy to translate jobs that we are so familiar with but I think most of us do a lot of commercial & industry stuff that may not be related to our expertise. However, we could be the best 'guru' to refer to when some translation jobs require terminologies only we, can understand.
It is something we all have to live with, improvise for the sake of translation. Given our background experience, I believe we are getting better as each translation job is completed.
That's why we need this platform to share and help each other out!
Cheers !
