Through the survey, we tend to see if there is any space for Translia to make improvement on timeliness delivery by changing our website. In our system, clients will get 100% money back if they can't get the translation by the deadline. Even getting the money back, clients won't be happy since they need the profressional translation. Some of our clients had such unhappy experience, and myself. No one was happy to see the returned credits. At the same time, no translator is happy with that. So what can we do tegether?
Could you pls let us know if there is anything prevent you from getting the job done and what change you expect Translia to do to make your translaiton on-line easier? Of course, we won't sacrifice the translation quality.
1. I don't have enough time.
2. I don't know that clients don't need to pay us if the translation is not 100% done by the deadline.
3. I don't have a good enough translation so I don't set it to Ready to commit and hope others can work on it.
4. Sometimes I can't set segments to Ready to commit but don't know why.
5. Sometimes the segment is locked and not available for my eiditing.
6. Misc. and please explain.

Dear Yollanda,
As for me, I have never received any notifications of new assignments and I have to go and check everyday. It is not very convenient (I am GMT+10!).
In addition, sometimes I can't set segments to "Ready to commit" and I don't know why.
Best,
Alice

Deadline issue
Hello Yolanda,
as far as I know, we English-Spanish translators have never experienced the kind of problem you mention. Therefore I am afraid I cannot be of any use to you in this matter.

general observation
Fellow translators,
Maybe someone can help me understand better -- I am Rank 6. How did I get that ? Not by actual translation work. I got that rank through points obtained after making comments and suggestions on other peoples' translations, which didn't really make me feel good. In fact, I felt rather "bad" doing that as if I was trying to show off ! My problem is everytime I get a notification, I click on the job and somehow it's ALL been taken and the status for every segment would be ready to commit so I can't even get to edit !! I am wondering if I will ever get to work here.
My suggestion is that ensure
My suggestion is that ensure your email is the one you use daily, for quick response. Usually, the job will be done when you check it after a few days.
time to receive translation
Often when I get the Email for a new translation, once I look at it the job is already done, even that there is still plenty time left for doing it!!
Shall I look my email in the middle of the night.????
I live in Taiwan, so the time difference plays against me....

time to receive translation
I had not thought about that GEORGE
You are right. Maybe there are too little clients for so many translators.

Misc. segments that may have more than one answer.
Hi;
What I have found in working on the site translation is that some of the terms used in English may have a specific term that is used in the target language. If I don't know that term, where do I turn to find out what should be used? Also within the translation there are terms that are repeated in several places. Is there a way to create a glossary that we can access to see what is being used for those terms? On the other hand can the programming be set up to search and translate repetitious phrases?
Enjoying the challenge,
Thomas
feedback on translation
As I was doing my first translation I couldn't edit things that had been committed by higher ranks translators which meant I had to write a comment to ask them to correct their bits. It would have worked fine if the translators had updated their sections but unfortunately, one translator didn't seem to correct his mistakes (they were only spelling and punctuation mistakes so it didn't matter too much!) before the translation got to the 100 % target. I don't know how you could get round this problem unless maybe you were to appoint a high rank translator to do a final check taking into account all the comments that were made.
Anyway, overall I found my translation experience very good. I love the idea of working in an interactive way.
same experience
Hello inbetween2cultures ,
I had the same experience, too. The suggestions I submitted were not spelling and punctuation but were actually quite significant translation translation errors.
Thank you for the feedback
Thank you for the feedback and the help to finish some jobs!
As to the problem you mentioned such as final translation with known errors, client rating works. You know that clients will rate the job & translators after the job is done. If there are unacceptable errors, translators will get poor rating then the rank will decrease. This gives the newly joined, low rank but good translators more opportunity. Finally, the real good translators are the top ones with the highest rank.
response to feedback
AMEN .....let's hope I will one day get into that group ! I don't mind sharing knowledge and experience by giving suggestions through the comments box. I would like it better if I got paid, though. :)
(1) I have the same doubt
(1) I have the same doubt with that of "INBETWEEN TWO CULTURES"'s. The person that previously registered may enjoy a relative higher rank than the one registering recently because he( she) has done some jobs or posted some threads. But can you come at the conclusion that the latter is not better than the previous one in doing the work of transaltion? Perhaps the latter one has been engaged in translation for many years and with a good command of English before registering in Translia. Then why he can't do the job "proofreading"? Just like the article we have just finished, we can only do the job "editing" and the points and the payment for "editing" and "proofreading" are different. Take a contrary example, now I have a rank of 5 simply because I browsed some threads, posted several threads and did one translation job, but my skills in English, I think, is the same with the time when I just registered in Translia.
(2) I further want to say that the arrangement for translation in segments is not suitable for translatingarticles with specialty. Just like the one above said, some terms are needed to keep the same from beginning to the end. If many people transalte an article at the same time, then who is in charge of this work to let all people in translation to keep the translation with the terms in the same meaning? Even if for the same person, this is difficult to do with the arrangement in the way in Translia.
(3) From my experience in the past, each translator has its translation direction (s). If the articles for translating are not classified in specialties, such as finance, architecture, business, law, etc. and are done by the people who are not familiar with the subjects, the quality for translation perhaps is not very high. So I think the articles of different kinds should be done by groups with different specialties.
To your great questions...
(1) We can't give anyone higher rank. Anyone has to prove it on Translia and surely they can as long as they are really good. The Rank not only means you are good at translation, but also know how to work efficiently and collaboratively on Translia.
(2) Everyone has the responsibility and the higher rank translators of course can do more since they have more power (which as a result they will have even higher rank). The problem is same for the traditional translation model when multiple translators are required for one project. So the solution is same: each is aware how to improve quality and communicates with the team actively, then the team reaches an agreement and follows it.
BTW, technically, keeping consistency is easier on Translia since Search feature is so good and easy to use, especailly for large projects. In addition, the TM feature for translators will be available soon.
(3) Absulotely agree! You may know that we have a field Subject in Translator Profile. It's designed for such purpose, but we haven't used it for translator selection since it's a little early now.
It's so happy to be able to discuss translation issues about Translia! It helps both!
At the same, don't be disapponted at the differences you found compared with the practices you already know. If all are same, there would be no Translia team at all.
