It supports, rather than replaces us to make decision. Finally we have to use our own judgment to make wise decision, from choosing translation for a term to adding or removing a feature.
The problem here is that anyone using this site, regardless of linguistic background, nationality and/or education, can submit answers to such polls, which doesn't exactly give reliable results. I believe the language combination based groups are better suited for such discussions, as the managers of such groups have the option to set these up for approval of group member based on individual translators' credentials. If polls are used in this way, it may result in too many 'wild guesses' by members that have no reliable knowledge of a specific language combination.

Deciding a better translation is one of the major purposes. People with different background may prefer different translation and creating a poll can help us know which is better for most of people.
As long as your purpose is related to translation or Translia webiste itself, feel free to use it.
