Dear Translia Administrators, Dear Transliators,
Sad to say, some translators seem to prioritize their dislike of a given colleague over team work.
They sure are entitled to their own feelings, for what they are worth.
As to the way they publicly express them, I am seriously worried about where the line is being drawn sometimes.
Following is the Copy&Paste of a french translator's comment about me :

The questionability of the title (WTF acronym!) notwithstanding, I thought everyone has a right to know the english meaning of what's being said here, so here goes :
"The sucker comes after all is said and done to raid the dosh. Get this crook out of the way."
Whatever frustration one may want to vent about not always having the final word on a revision, reading something comparable is in my opinion very disturbing - beside reflecting a profound misconception if not disrespectful ignorance of Translia's payment system.
Be it what it may, I leave it to your appreciation.

My Sincere Apologies to Translia
For want of direct contact between transliators outside the job & segment comments, I have found myself resorting to these *Forum* boards to post a subject about three serious breaches of Translia's code of conduct on the part of two envious colleagues on a bashing-plot against me.
Now it occurs to me I should have use the *Support* feature to this purpose.
I sincerely apologize for unnecessarily occupying public space here.

Feel free to delete and archive this entire topic which is nothing but a reminder of things we all know, like a news flash about a bad event we could all do without, thereby bringing no water to Translia's mill.

Personally
I've seen some professional communities fighting hard against un-professional comments inside the system. I've also seen that both sides (who're both believing themselves as "right") "punished" by the community, or they "punished" the whole community. You know what I mean, anything caused by different opinions can be solved by discussion, not by harsh words. I don't know what's going on at the "somewhere" in a language I read less. However, I hope all Transliators can follow the cod of ethics here, and keep it a Professional Community, the word "Professional" explains it all. Thanks, my colleagues in other language pairs, you have all my respect since you're having higher rank than me, at least, now.
Unacceptable
I was kind of expecting this to happen some time, actually, when everybody jumped on the Translia bandwagon (when clients start pouring in). But not so soon! It's a shame that you were the one taking the first blow, panglosse, you seem to be quite efficient and professional. Fortunately, the site admins are active and take swift action. I am pleased with Yolanda's response.

Translia is a community of translators and customers. Please, be polite and respectful in your interactions with other members.
Be Collaborative
Translators can work on any unclosed job by either translating the original documents or improving the translations done by others. Translators shall make improvement to translation done by others only when s/he is certain that the existing translation contains errors, including but not limited to mistranslation, typo, inconsistency, style, etc.
Keep it Clean
Translia is not an adult site or a site where anything goes. Any content you add to the site ought to be “safe for work”.

I won't disclose the author of the following lines, which could be aimed at anyone of us, but everyone should know that it exists somewhere on Translia.
(copied & pasted excerpts from two public comments made by one specific translator about another specific translator. The first one shortly before the closing of a french job, the second one after the closing of the job regardless)

Whatever one may think of another contributor, I can't help questioning the presence on Translia of whoever identifies with such blatant colleague bashing (arbitrary judgements, ad hominem attacks, false accusations, judgements on mere intent, derogatory labeling, calumny, insult, mockery, dubious innuendos)
As far as I'm concerned, I would rather have the decency to walk away by myself than stoop to such behavior on a serious, committed, professional website dedicated to TEAM TRANSLATION.
And please, don't feel sorry for the target of those lines, since it may as well be you.
Any suggestions to not let this plague spread even more are greatly welcome.

This is the problem, not the reaction to this.
2. The style of the comment is politely straightforward and witty. Not a bad word.
3. To stop the plague is easy: be the first on the job, do the groundwork, not only the "proofreading".
4. By reporting this comment to Yolanda you are exactly playing the tactful victim.
5. "Questioning the presence" of the people who speak up is the death of the democracy.

I confess I'm a little unsettled by the way you're addressing me personally out of the blue.
Be it what it may, let me just point to you certain general problems your presentation can't but bring about :

a) you're picturing a "person who always comes last and changes anything possible". In other words, a lurker planning on his/her day schedule according to Translia.
Sacrificing one's life and freedom for moderate earnings ? Very realistic from a personal enrichment perspective, indeed. Tell me more, please ;)
b) "so s/he can earn easy points" . Mind you. What do you think is easier, a first rough draft perhaps off-handedly done between two soaps, or a consistent sitting & thinking session to proceed the very gist of Translia's content creators and bring it in the best possible way to one's compatriots ? You may think the latter is easier, fair enough. Well, how about tolerance ? Why should everybody's mind processing be similar ? I know translators who prefer a million times translating a technical notice than a philosophy text. And conversely. And I know happy correctors who wouldn't spend a second focusing on a content and just delight in rewriting typos. And I know high-caliber translators who produce the kind of content one dreams about but which are rife with spelling mistakes and typos. As some individuals delight in accounting, mental calculation feats, declare they have "a kick out of figures", while others like me hate calculation but solve beautiful equations. Face it : people are shades of grey. But, more important : NO ONE IS BETTER

Either you've got an affinity with the author of the comment I quoted, or politeness is a very relative notion for you, "straightforwardness" being the usual excuse. A wife-beater is "straightforward", and the beaten wife is a "tactful victim". Alright. Someone publicaly telling you "your translation is bad" or "I don't know in which state of mind you were doing this" or "you only care about your rank / your points" is right to do so, because it's straightforward, it's witty, and does not feature a "bad" word. Come on.

So addressing the symptom instead of the syndrome is what you suggest ?
Besides, saying this, you don't seem to be a great supporter of Translia's groundbreaking concept of OPEN TRANSLATION. Yes, "open", like in "open-mindedness". Your gross reduction of the project phases into 1) groundwork and 2) proofreading, that's all, blatantly ignores all the transitory steps, namely what makes it all exciting. I have seen segments with more than 10 revisions. Ten, not one. And it could have been improved still. And granted, we definitively have to stop it at some point. But at least we tried. That's what makes us humans and not machines.
Finally, there will always be a "first one" and a "last one". And I suspect some of us have trouble getting over this. How foolish they think. Can't they see even if we're not cloth of the same cut, all equal, we're all equals in the end ? (Perhaps that is the very meaning of politeness)

You're absolutely right from a tactical point of view. The snag is : I don't play games.
"I" may be a "victim", but my being targeted by a disrespectful colleague or not is irrelevant eventually.
And you bet I'm voicing my disarray in a tactful manner, because I see only counter-productivity in being unnecessarily curt and rude.
Moreover, I'm not "reporting to Yolanda", the way a school kid would do, but submitting a point of general interest to all of us, in the hope this sad occurrence will ironically enough serve as a caveat as to what not to do. (The proverbial "don't do anything to others you wouldn't like them to do to you")
While I believe our administrators shouldn't be left out of this, I know they have but little leeway as to avoiding it (unless it reaches the point to which they see fit to resort to understandably more drastic methods), and I must confess I bank more on a general awareness among us transliators.

Here again, you're perfectly correct in theory. But you seem leniently oblivious of one simple reality : showing disrespect does not equate "speaking up". Perhaps in a primitive democracy, like some transitory form between the jungle state and our modern world, a more minimalist stance of the term would hold ground. Fact is, we're among civilized people in the twenty first century, where venting one's gripes, however sincerely, still has to follow certain elementary rules. In democracies like ours, law notions like libel, calumny, defamation, insult, are well established and act as moderating forces.
