Setting segment status
Dear Yolanda:
It seems that translator's guide is not updated regarding setting segment status. In fact now we have four categories, namely: Needs translation/ Needs editing/ Needs proofreading and Ready to commit, while translator's guide includes only three. Could you please explain the effects that the new rule entails?

New translation process is applied!
We just finished the new feature to give the clients more choice on the tranlation process. (The guide is under update :-)
T: Translation;
TE: Translation + editing;
TEP: Translation + editing + proofreading;
In TE and TEP, only the translators with higher rank can do editing and/or proofreading (and change the segment status accordingly). For translators with lower ranks than the translators who do the translation, they are not allowed to do editing/proofreading. It can avoid useless editing in some degree.
Secondly, the contribution per edit by editors/proofreaders is different with the translators. The ratio is 1:2:3.
Surely we will provide the new guide to all of you, we need to speed up and thank you for bringing up the great question!

I want to know whether the rate is all the same. Sometimes the work done perhaps is not so bad in a whole and took some translators a lot of time, but the translators responsible for editing or proofreading perhaps only need a little work for editing or proofreading. If the rate keeps like this unchanged, I think it is unfair to the translators for translating.

What are the main differences between "Needs Editing" and "Needs Proofreading"? It is not immediately apparent to the naked eye the necessity of having two independent categories for the same action. It seems that “Needs Proofreading" should be sufficient.

Proofreading process is for
Proofreading process is for clients who need excellent quality. Usually "Needs Proofreading" means that the translation is OK as a whole but not good enough (not fluent, too wordy...)
For some "easier" languages, translation + proofreading is the process applied by many clients; for others, translation + editing + proofreading is applied, especially when the target language is so different with the source.

As a "retired" translator
Editing and proofreading is not the same to me, neither to the process back to the dates I was doing translation. Does the client change process? What's your ideas, other Transliators?
Editing vs. proofreading
I have the understanding that editing is the process of correcting the use of words to carry the proper meaning;
and proofreading is the process of making sure the syntax and sentence structure are correct in the target language.
