German is one of the world's major languages and the most widely spoken first language in the EU. German is spoken by more than 100 million native speakers and also by about 80 million non-native speakers.

German is spoken primarily in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the United States it is the fifth most spoken language at home after English, Spanish, Chinese, and French. It is also the third most taught foreign language in the English speaking world after French and Spanish.
