What and How?

Hi,

Was wondering if you could shed some light on the following things:

1) How does iClew actually work?
2) What is it supposed to do?
3) What are its functions? Is it like a search engine?
4) Could you perhaps provide a screenshot of how the application works?
5) The questions that we want to ask, are they only concerned with translation? Or could other things (ie. more general things) be inquired too?

Sorry for the many questions but I wanted to understand iClew before using it.

Thanks for your time.

What iClew does and how

Thank you for the questions.

> 1) How does iClew actually work?
[V] In short it allows you to ask questions and/or give answers easily. For details, have a look at this page http://www.iclew.org/node/7.

> 2) What is it supposed to do?
[V] When you submit a question, it routes the questions who most likely know the answers. If you are presented with a question, you may answer it if you know something helpful, or simply ignore it if you don't or questions are relevant to you.

>3) What are its functions? Is it like a search engine?
[V] It is like a search engine somehow but not exactly. The search engines like Google search for the web pages that include your keyword, or questions in our case. iClew does search but it searches for PEOPLE who might know the answers.

> 4) Could you perhaps provide a screenshot of how the application works?
[V] Sure. Attached pls find the Ask a question dialog. It's so simple.

> 5) The questions that we want to ask, are they only concerned with translation? Or could other things (ie. more general things) be inquired too?
[V] You can ask any questions. It is ideal for but not limited to translation questions. However, iClew would work better if your questions are specific and include necessary details. After all, iClew is not a chat app.

Let me know if the above answered your questions. BTW, you may try asking the above questions via iClew and compare...

PS. iClew is community based

It will work better and better as more people use it. Be patient if you don't get answers as promptly as expected at this moment.

Re: What and How

I would love to provide you with all information you require but unfortunately I cannot actually answer at all.
Due to the troubles I described earlier, I have uinstalled this application from my machine without having explored it. I also understood (accordingly to the technical staff of Translia) that the newer version has been applied.
As far as I understood iClew is a kind of interactive communicator between the users of Translia. It doesn't look like a search machine.
Thus, my suggestion is just to install it on your computer and explore yourself. Once I solved the problems which the application has caused, I will try to install it again.
I am sorry not being helpful. Good luck with iClew.

IClew doenload

Can we download it safely? Would be good to have an answer before I download it!

Concern about iClew

Margo's comment concerns me. I work on a Mac and use Safari most of the time.

Can we get some assurance that some of us are not asking for trouble if we download iClew? Sounds like this software might be "half-baked"; i.e. we are being asked to do the beta-testing.

It also isn't clear to me why we need this in the first place. I thought Translia was going to have us working on SaaS software. So why do we need to download this program?

Shouldn't Translia's priority be to get us some translations to work on? Rather than downloading iClew?

Some answers from Translia would be welcome. Thanks--

Harvey

iClew doesn't support Mac / disclaimer

Harvey, firstly iClew is currnelty a Windows app so it doesn't work with Mac. We are sorry for that.

I understand your concern and would like to clarify it as below.
* We invite Translia members to try iClew but we don't want to force anyone to use it. You should download it based on your judgement and use it at your own risk - as always.
* Some users find iClew works well and some might not. While we are doing our best in improving it, we can provide the product only on an as-is basis. No guaranty.

I hope you're not frightened with the above frank answers too much :-) All software licneses say so but not all software makers dare to mention that in forum.

Anyway, I hope you find iClew is an interesting and helpful utility. In fact, your feedback, even just repressing the concerns, are helpful. Thank you!

IClew installation

Thanks Vic Dickson for your frank and clear answer! It gives me an idea of what to expect.
Cheers!

IClew and Mac

Vic-

Thanks for your response. I appreciate your frankness.

Given its tentative nature and (more importantly) the fact it does not run on a Mac, I won't be downloading it.

Harvey

iClew and MAC

I am also working on MAC :).
It is a great machine. Unfortunately there are lots of applications (especially for translators) which do not work on MAC. That is why I had to consider a dual boot. Next to MAC, I use also Windows.

Using MAC you cannot work with TRADOS or any similar programs. As far as I know there are no translator tools working on MAC. Tell me I am wrong, please. If there are such tools and you know them, please , let me know.
regards,
M

Mac--great machine but . . .

Margo--

I have the same frustration--no existing CAT programs seem to run on Mac OS X. Considering the amount of competition, I would have thought at least one enterprising company would have adapted their CAT program to run on OS X by now but I too am unaware of any.

I just purchased MemoQ; to install it on my Mac, I also had to purchase VMWare Fusion (recommendation of the folks who sell MemoQ) and Windows XT. The program apparently works but so far, I have not had the time to learn it and hence have not used it. It has made me realize, though, that to use it with any decent response speed, I have to install another 1 Gb of RAM into my 18-month-old Mac for a total of 2 Gb. It that's still too slow, I guess I'll shut everything down on the Mac side when I have to do a translation with MemoQ.

This kind of problem is another one of the reasons Translia is attractive since it runs, according to Vic, as an SaaS program.

iClew

I have downloaded and installed iClew on my machine. Unfortunately, had to uninstall :-(
In some way it influenced my system, that none of browsers wouldn' t work...
I work with Windows Vista. Would Vista form the problem?

Margo

Additional info

Margo, we are really sorry for the troubles. Could you povide a bit more information about your system so that we can look into the issue?

For example, the exact version of your Wondiws, browsers, and their langauges. Thank you.

an error/exception after uninstall

please find below the message I get every singel time while opening browser or a new window:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIWindowsRegKey.open]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://iclew/content/overlay.js :: Load :: line 418" data: no]

additional info

Sure :)

Iam working with Windows Vista Home 32-bit. Browsers are: Firefox or Safari.
After I have installed the application, continously I got messages (don' t remember exact words) saying some .dll files are corrupt and won' t work or an error alert. As consequence I couldn' t open any browser.
I decided quickly to uninstall iClew.
Unfortunately, there is something permanently changed in the system. After uninstallation I get always an error message, wherein lClew is being mentioned. Although I hope to resolve this problem soon , I cannot deny that this is pretty annoying.
I will try to make a screenshot and will let you know what exactly this message says.
Regards
Margo

language of the browser

is Dutch

Margo, thank you for providing all those details

One of my colleagues will email you for helping you resolve it. Considering the complexity it may involves, I think the direct email communication would be more efficiently. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience!

Solving problem

Hi Vic, your colleague has already contacted me and suggested what to do about this problem. I really appreciate your concern, though I dont think I will follow the advice of your colleague :)
Anyway thanks for your consideration. I hope to find a solution by myself. And do not bother anymore, please! You couldnt know that would happen, could you?
Kindest regards

You can remove FF addon manually

Margo, you're welcome. My colleagues believe the new release will resolve your problem. However, you don't want to take the risk, right? So you can remove iClew addon from FireFox and everything will be OK. I assume you know how to do that but if you need any hints:

1. Launch FireFox.
2. Choose Tools from the main menu.
3. Choose Add-ons.
4. Click Uninstall button for what you want to remove.

Let's know if you work it out finally.

Thanks Vic

Excellent solution!
I did it an dit worked out.
Thank you again :)

Have a good day :)
