The Translia concept appeals to me, so I joined as a translator, but where are the jobs you promised us? If I log in and click on "My Translation" in the account menu and then on "jobs", or on "Translation" from the main menu, both of which take me to http://www.translia.com/jobs, I see (without filters) exactly 4 jobs, all proof-reading jobs from you! What am I doing wrong? Or is the site so new that you don't have any customers yet? Peter.

Hello everyone.
A translator is ranked by the following four factors: client rating, endorsements, kudos, and page views. My question pertains to the first two factors- client rating and endorsements. There are few jobs/clients available on Translia and I am wondering if it is possible to do "pro bono" work in order to obtain positive client ratings. Also, how do we acquire endorsements if we have no paying jobs? I may answer my own questions as I become more familiar with Translia. However, any comments that may answer my questions are welcome.

Where are the jobs?
I am new to Translia and was curious about the lack of jobs available as well. I would like to thank Peter for raising the issue and Yolanda and Vic Dickson for responding so openly about the issue. Hopefully, the lack of work is due to the fact that Translia is a new site and that it will change with time and exposure.
On another note, I have a question aimed towards translators that have been in the business for a while. Do you all find that because of the large Spanish speaking population in the USA, it is more difficult to acquire Spanish>English jobs?

No worry about the Spanish>English jobs. There is always balance - the reason that there are Spanish translators is because that there is a need.

Peter, we're happy you put forward the question, which many translators might be guessing.
Frankly and briefly, no, we don't have any customers at this moment. Translia is so new that we need some time to educate the clients. Further more, as both the site and community are not totally ready, we haven't started promoting Translia among customers yet - we will not do that until we are sure the clients can be satisfied.
Currently our developers are working hard for completing and improving the site. You might not feel it but we are adding new features to the site day to day. From your side, you can push it ahead by doing any of the below.
In fact, even your posting in this forum is helpful - Translia is community based. We need build a professional community before we can build a large client base - Thank you!

I'm glad that we have the possibility of practice and the chance to learn how this system works.
I too have been wondering where the work is. Now I know and am willing to wait. In the meantime I will work on raising my rank so that I can be more effective on the team that I am chosen to work with.

SEO for your website

I've registered at your website and see that it's very new. You only have 4 jobs available and they relate to proofreading of this website ...:)
The website currently has no Google Page Rank, this means it's not even indexed by Google. Just imagine how it will be to compete with proz.com and other similar websites having so small promotion abilities....
I understand that every thing has a beginning... Just for your information along with translation I provide high quality SEO services for my customers. Seems it is what you need now to increase visibility, traffic, attract new members etc.
Speaking about my SEO credentials I'd like to note that after 2 months my customer's website is in Google Top 10 search results for 30 keywords!

P.S. The website currently has a choice of only 1 Target language. I guess it's not enough for many linguists. For example my second Target language is Ukrainian.

Hey! To be exact, not 4 jobs, there are more jobs there by clicking "free translation", you'll see 30-40 jobs there :)
BTW, I'm also an SEO expert - no kidding ^O^

If we want to be another Proz.com, it's not easy to exceed them in a short time. That's why Translia starts from a totally different direction.
Scary idea
Are you really certain that is something to emulate? Proz.com, that is.
That site offers translators a very small amount for work, less than they can live on. There is even a recent petition going around against them for this practice. What they have been doing does not help translation as a profession, it makes clients think they can get translations for next to nothing or that LSPs can pay professional translators that way.
I really hope the management of Translia has better ideas than Proz, else it is just adding to obsoleting translation as a viable profession.

Hopefully a new business idea can help to "save" the profession
The bare idea of translation becoming obsolete as a viable profession makes my bones crack.
I do hope there are good ideas viable to be put thru by Translia, I've been around a lot and I've seen a lot too. If I can ever be of some help - no I'm no SEO (what's a SEO?) - I am right hare and willing to contribute.

Hello everybody,
I believe translation industry is an open business in the world. I am a supporter for Proz.com. One reason is that the translation website supports all its member by promoting non-low paying rate to translator. And, that's really good.
Translia must support each member, even can try doing better. Do not become a translation website that pros to clients by letting them decide the cheapest as much as they want. That's why Translia needs elite translator group and separated it with new translator group. The elite group certainly gets more payment and certainly provides quality translation. So, if the clients want to get cheap translation, they could go to this new translator group. The client still gets translation from Translia, but of course the quality is not guaranteed and as good as the elite translator group. If the clients want to translate technical source term, they could visit elite translator group. Making two categories of group could be handy for clients, to adjust with their need.
This way is not provided by Proz, neither odesk or tolingo.

To be honest as a client, I don't like at all the idea of "elite" and "others". I'm also a translator too so I can speak knowing both side.
Frankly speaking, if I have worked over 6 months on a book, I sure don't want it to be handled by people only motivated by promotion and money, all self-centered knowint they're "elite". And even more frankly speaking, if my book was to be proof readed or translated by such people, I'd die in a long agony to see it.
Why so?
I believe that translators are a human translating for human. I don't write my books for some cash-pot. I want the translation done by humans who have also an interrest in the type of work I give. If not, I'll chose someone who has better interest in it. If you're anywhere near human, there's flaws and room for improvement... that's why I wouldn't have the elite and all done to my works. And there's way more potential into those who are looked down than in those who look down others. At the very least those who are a little lower can see that they have room from improving while those who are "elite" are just going to congratulate themselves saying they're already at perfection and spoil their own chance to improve !
