Community translation

Community translation is the translation activities that are initialized and performed by the members for the common purpose of their community.

The community translation is usually, if not always, free. The motivation of participating in community translation may be varied but the following two factors are most significant.

  • The translation will finally benefit all community members including the participants themselves.
  • Mental awards - typically the recognition from the community.

The community translation activities can be found from Open Source development and religion communities. Their practices help us in developing Open Translation model.

The community translation are typically spontaneous and self-organized but more and more firms are trying to leverage the power of community for their commercial translation projects. For example, Facebook has its website translated by the users.

Translia is an ideal platform for community translation, for both non-commercial and commercial projects.
